Dear Provider
The approach, developed by Laurie Thomas from Brunel University has been widely published under the heading Self Organised Learning. It is aimed at developing the skills for coaching people to become effective learners, regardless of the area being learned. It is of value to anyone interested in looking at ways to improve learning skills.
The approach has a generic focus and can be applied in all curriculum areas and in all contexts. It is relevant for students on higher level programmes as well as for students with learning difficulties. It can be used by subject teachers as well as personal tutors. It is relevant in classroom settings and in more open learning contexts but it is of particular use when there is time for one to one conversations.
The approach has resulted in impressive improvements for students with a history of failure in education because it places the focus on how they see their difficulties in learning and helps them develop learning strategies that work for them.
It is a powerful tool when used with Individual Learning Plans as students are given the skills to identify and improve their own learning. The approach gives practical methods to enable personalised learning to happen. SMART targets are an integral part of the approach. The approach also gives staff tools, not only for having learning conversations with students, but also for providing opportunities for staff to reflect on and improve their own learning strategies.
